 「嫌なことから目を背ける」あるいは「知らぬふりをする」などの類の表現を英語でする場合には以下のような表現があります。 "like an ostrich burying its head in the sand"  「砂の中に頭を突っ込む／入れるダチョウのような」 *ostrich=ダチョウ＝駝鳥 これはダチョウが恐怖や脅威に直面すると自分の頭を地面に突っ込んで隠すという俗説からきているそうですが、これは根拠のない話だそうです。 以下に参考になる説明が書かれています。 Historians assume that this single sentence is the root of the myth about ostriches burying their head in the sand. 他にもこの信憑性について書かれている記事や映像がありますので興味のある人は直接調べるといいでしょう。 "bury one's head in the sand" 「砂の中に頭を突っ込む／入れる」

 最近台湾で2024年1月の総統選挙に関し事前世論調査で偽世論調査を発表した記者がいたとして台湾発の報道が日本でもニュースになっていましたが、それに関する英語表現で「〜の身柄を拘束し尋問する／取り調べる」あるいは「尋問のため〜を拘束する」などがありますが例えば以下のように言います。 take someone into custody for questioning 「〜の身柄を拘束し尋問する／取り調べる」 あるいは、 take someone in for questioning 「尋問のため〜を拘束する 例えば以下のような補足した言い方もできます。 They were taken in by police for questioning. 「彼らは警察に尋問のため連行された」 なのでこれを言い換えると以下のようにもなります。 The police took them in for questioning. 「警察は彼らを尋問のため連行した」 この場合の"take"の使い方も注意ですね。 冒頭の台湾に関する記事でこの表現が使われたいのでリンクしておきます。 ....... were taken in for questioning along with seven witnesses. このリンク先でも使用されているいますが、例えば 「〜が〜の疑いで拘留されている 」と言いたい場合は以下のような表現になる。 someone has been detained on suspicion of disseminating fake opinion polls. 「〜が偽の世論調査を広めた疑いで拘留されている」 *opinion poll=世論調査 例えば 「意志に反して勾留されている」 と言いたい場合は次のようになる。 someone has been detained against someone's will.

  「どんな手を使ってでも〜する」と言うどちらかというとネガティブな表現かもしれませんが英語で言うと次のようなものがあります。 by all means meansがいわゆる「手段、方法」という意味になるので"all means"ということで「すべての手段、あらゆる方法」ということになります。 例えると、 They hindered her success by all means. 言い換えると They prevented her from accomplishing her success. They hampered her success by all means. 他にも"do whatever it takes"や"by whatever means"という表現もあって例えば次のような感じになる。 They tried to do whatever it takes to hinder her success. They tried to hinder her success by whatever means.

 「〜で事足りる、〜で十分だ」と言いたい時の英語表現は一つに以下のようなものがある。 something be all that is needed in/to/at/..... 例えば記事では以下のように使われている。 Newsweekの記事。 to assume that supplements are all that is needed at this point, 文脈を考えれば以下のように"all"から始める事もできる。 All that is needed is ..... 以下はNPRの記事。 "All that is needed is two hands" いわば以下のようなよく知られた表現と同じだ。 That's all you need to do.「それさえすればいい」 All you need to do is (to) do ....「〜するだけでよい、あなたに必要な事は〜だけである」  ＊is (to) doの (to) は省略されている。

「あらゆる手を尽くす、全力を尽くす」を英語で表現すると "pull out all the stops (for something/someone) to do" 例えば以下のような。 The team owner pulled out all the stops to reach an agreement with him. If you pull out all the stops, you can get a good result. The paramedic pulled out all the stops to save his life. 他にも "move heaven and earth to do" も同様に「あらゆる手を尽くす、全力を尽くす」と言う意味があります。 言い換えれば「何かを達成する為に全力を尽くす」という事です。
