今回英語レッスンでidioms(慣用句)を集中的にやりましたので、それらを紹介します。
それぞれの単語は極めて簡単な部類ですが、一つの文になるとほとんどは相当想像力を働かせないとわからない慣用句です。
- put it in a nutshell=to summarize (手短に(かいつまんで)話す)
- to get straight to the point= no details (e.g., Can you get straight to the points?)(端的に言う)
- I heard it on the grapevine=rumor(を風の噂で聞く)
- He’s not in the picture=not involved(to cut out of the picture=to remove)(例:片方の親だけの場合、お父さんはいない、お母さんはいない、など)
- to get the wrong end of the stick(取りちがえる、勘違いする、すっかり誤解する)
- to get the short end of the stick=to be punished(penalized )(損な役割を担わされる、割を食う)
- to be on the same wavelength(page)=we think the same, we agree with each other.(心が通い合っている、議論が噛み合っている、波長があう)
- can’t make heads or tails of it=I really don’t understand it.(全く理解できない)
- to beat around the bush=to be indirect(遠回しに探る、回りくどい言い方をする、)※西洋で遠回しに言うのは好まれない傾向。
- to get it straight from the horse’s mouth=straight from the source(その情報を当の本人から直接聞く)
- It’s like talking to a brick wall= the other person doesn’t understand, the other person is stubborn.(馬の耳に念仏、全く聞く耳を持たない)
- keep him in the loop= to update and inform someone.(逐一情報を提供する)
- nutshell=簡潔に述べる、堅果の殻、ごく小さなもの
- penalize=不利益をもたらす、不利にする、罰する
- wavelength=波長、個人の物の考え方
- grapevine=ブドウのつる、(秘密の)情報源、口づて
