There is nothing for it but to〜とは「〜するよりほか仕方がない」という意味で、There is no choice but to〜やhave no choice but to〜も同様の意味。
これは実は以外に覚えやすいと思う。なぜなら冒頭でThere is nothing for it、There is no choice、have no choiceと最初から「なにもない」「選択肢はない」と言っているので、次にbut toと続いて、あ〜but以下以外に選択肢はないんだなという事がわかる。
例えば、
- There is nothing for it but to wait.(待つよりほかない)
- There is nothing for it but to wait for an opportunity.(機会を待つよりほかない)
- There is nothing for it but to improve gradually.(徐々に改善していくしかない)
- There is no choice but to wait for him to hold a meeting.(ミーティングを行うには彼を待つほかない)
- There is no choice but to go.(行くしか選択肢はなし)
- There is no choice but to brace ourselves for something.(我々が覚悟を決めるしか選択肢はない)
- We have no choice but to do so.(我々はそうする以外に選択肢はない)
- I have no choice but to escape from jail.(私は刑務所を脱走する以外に選択肢はない)
- She had no choice but to do that.(彼女にはそうする以外に選択肢はなかった)
長い文の割には難しくない部類なので、記憶に残りやすいと思う。
